The Area
The town is an attractive and historic seaside resort some 86 miles south-east of London and 8 miles north-east of Dover. English Heritage now have responsibility for both Walmer Castle and Deal Castle, built in the 16th century during the reign of Henry V111. The town has a Grade 11 Listed pier as well as several museums. Cultural destinations include the Astor Theatre and the Lindin Hall Studio Art Gallery. The town centre has many independent shops and was named by the Daily Telegraph as its ‘High Street of the Year.’ Local supermarkets include Sainsburys and Aldi. Local amenities include both rugby and football clubs as well as a rowing club. Royal St. Georges golf course, in nearby Sandwich, is host to this year’s Open. The town holds a twice weekly market and has many cafes, pubs and bistros. On the edge of the town is the 250- acre country park, Betteshanger Park, ideal for cycling and walking. Local schools include Warden House primary school, rated as Outstanding by Ofsted and Brewood Secondary school rated as Good by Ofsted. Independent education is offered at Northbourne Park amongst others. London can be reached via the M2 and A2 and Deal railway station offers a service to London Charing Cross.
