Chard is a market town on the edge of Somerset, close to the Devon and Dorset borders at the southernmost point of the County. The town has a population of some 14,000 people and it sits at an altitude of 121 metres, making it the highest town in Somerset. As well as many local shops the town has both Sainsburys and Tesco as well as national chains such as Boots. The 91 acres of land around Chard Reservoir provide a superb local nature reserve, enjoyed by anglers and twitchers alike. Holyrood Academy provides secondary education in the area, whilst the 11th century church of St. Mary the Virgin and the museum provide historical interest. The town has many sports clubs including rugby, hockey, football, tennis, cricket and bowls clubs, whilst also providing a golf club. The town is some 15 miles from Yeovil and Taunton, the latter providing excellent independent schooling at Taunton School and King’s and Queen’s Colleges.
