The village is the largest in south Somerset with a population of around 2000 people. It has many local amenities including two historic pubs, a pharmacy, butchers, local shops, post office, a Grade 11 Listed church and a village hall. The Tithe Barn is also put to good use for local activities such as a playgroup and badminton. Cricket, tennis, football and bowling are also part of the village fabric. Both the First School and the Secondary School at Wadham are rated as Good by Ofsted. There are many more amenities, including a Waitrose supermarket, in the town of Crewkerne which is just two miles from the village. Also at Crewkerne is the mainline railway between Exeter and London Waterloo. The village also lies just 4 miles south of the A303 trunk road connecting Exeter to London. The much larger town of Yeovil in Somerset is some 7 miles to the east of the village and Exeter Airport is about 35 miles from Merriott.
