The village is unspoilt and is in a tranquil location, with some 6000 acres of land in the Parish. The village has a 16th century church and is close to Hatherleigh, the smallest town in Devon, but with many amenities including shops, butchers, bakers, 3 pubs, post office and two auction houses. The town also hosts a carnival and a summer arts festival. It is a thriving market town. To the south is Okehampton with a population of around 7500 people. The town has numerous primary schools and secondary education is provided at Okehampton College, rated as Outstanding by Ofsted. Independent education is offered at Bramdean School in Exeter. The town has many shops as well as Waitrose.
